The Balancing Act’s Gregory Fake Gives Back Through Prison Ministry

For his day job, Gregory Fake is an assistant television producer of the award-winning show that empowers women, Balancing Act.  In his free time, Gregory Fake can be found in a Florida prison and jail, counseling incarcerated men.  While this may appear to be an unlikely extension of Gregory Fake ’s expertise, it isn’t–he is very much committed to, and inspired by, giving back.

“Like many men, I returned to the church when I had my family,” explains Gregory Fake.  “It’s critical to raise children with core values that prepare them to face life’s challenges,” continues Gregory Fake.  Through the local Presbyterian Church, Gregory Fake began volunteering in prisons and jails and with work-release ministries.  That was ten years ago and he is still giving back.  Since beginning his volunteer work, Gregory Fake says has learned and grown tremendously from his experience.

Prison and jail life is completely foreign to most of American society, but Gregory Fake has learned to get past the stark environment and accept the inmates as people in need of love and forgiveness, just like everyone else. There, Gregory Fake provides counseling, advice, and a listening ear for inmates of all criminal backgrounds. “Oftentimes, inmates fall back into addiction or criminal behavior, but this is common on the road to accepting forgiveness and creating a path toward a brighter future,” says Gregory Fake.  He is there for inmates, whether or not they have lost hope in themselves.

While Gregory Fake has given a lot of himself to the inmates he has served, he has also gained in return.  “I am inspired by the inmates’ honesty about their struggles,” says Gregory Fake.  Working with inmates has taught Gregory Fake that there are no challenges in his own life that are too great to overcome.  “But it takes work, sometimes a lot of work,” Gregory Fake concedes.  Helping inmates move forward against all odds motivates and encourages Gregory Fake to continue this important volunteer work, despite his often demanding television production schedule.

Gregory Fake, whose career includes consultancy for Fortune 500 companies, banking law, and television production, received a BA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Georgetown.  Gregory Fake lives with his wife and two children in Pompano Beach, Florida, where he enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family.

What we’re trying to do is communicate and connect with the women’s audience that is interested in prenatal care but also women’s health-related issues that our company is dedicated to serving. It’s a certain segment of the audience that we’re trying to connect with, right? I think for us this is a primary portal to get there—especially The Balancing Act, their focus on women’s health, women’s health-related issues. For us it was a natural fit and really plugs us in with that segment in a very personal way.

Michael Sullivan, VP Sales & Marketing, Avlon Pharmaceuticals

As a result of the WriteSteps segments [The Balancing Act] aired, I have been asked to provide instruction on Common Core writing to teachers in a continuing education program at a Chicago community college. We also had a 250% increase in our website traffic on the days the program aired.

Thanks to Molly’s referral, our Awareness Ambassador, Herman, has made a presentation at a private school in Florida. Lauren connected us to Vicki Davis (coolcateacher.com) and we’re about to feature her as a guest blogger on our website. We’ve had a great deal of new interest in the program, and we celebrate each of these opportunities to empower more teachers and reach more students with the incredible skills they can learn from the Common Core writing standards.

Suzanne Klein, Founder & CEO, www.WriteStepsWriting.com

Susan, O2 Media is all about connecting and we are so pleased that we have helped you connect to so many opportunities as a result of appearing on The Balancing Act.

We were beyond thrilled with the short segment that highlighted one of our current customers, Beech Grove City Schools. The district was so excited to be a part of the program and to receive national recognition for their strides toward becoming a “Dream School.” We truly appreciate the time that was taken to have the video crew sent out to Indiana for the shoot. Valentina was amazing to work with and showed a genuine interest in what we are doing. She even took some time to speak to the school’s media class when the teacher brought them in to see what was going on. It was great to hear such positive feedback about the CurriculumLoft solution from our customer and we can’t wait to put together additional pieces with the footage her team was able to capture.

Dottie Coven and Alicia Peters

O2 Media thanks you for the opportunity to have been a part of this journey with you. Valentina is also grateful to have been able to share her passion with the eager young minds of Beech Grove City Schools. We look forward to working with you again.

From my initial dealings with The Balancing Act staff, my experiences were positive and pleasant. The entire process (from paperwork through the actual taping) was handled professionally and courteously, and each step leading up to the taping was thoroughly explained to me.

The day of the taping was great. I was greeted by Christine Flint, taken to make-up, the green room, etc. I was interviewed by Danielle Knox who covered the main points of my book and was friendly and easy to chat with. After the taping, Steve walked me around the studio and introduced me to Brenda Sultan and Steve Zucker, who talked with me about possible PR tactics to help with the selling of my novel, A Passion for Prying. Only days after the taping, I received my Tune In Promo video and verification of the air date. I have already posted the promo to my author website.

Nancy Mangano, Author, A Passion for Prying

Nancy, you are such a talented woman and we are so glad to have been able to showcase this exceptional work.

Designing Spaces on Lifetime with Kanwa Surfaces

The following segment aired on Lifetime Television. Joining the show was Vince Albachiaro to discuss Kanwa Surfaces.

Designing Spaces: Next up on “Designing Spaces:” counter tops.  Now, if you like the look of marble but maybe it’s a bit out of your price range, we’ve got a great alternative for you! We went to Sanford, Florida to get the story.

Fasculo: Whether a new home or a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, your choice for counter tops and wash basins is important to both the style and function.  With a natural appearance of stone becoming increasing popular, more counter tops are taking on the granite look.  With the beauty of granite come certain limitations.  Designers and manufactures have been developing new materials that capture that beauty of polished stone without the downside.  I’m here with Vince Albachiaro from Designs and Solid Surface, a Florida authorized pre-owned fabricator.  And, Vince, we need not look far around this kitchen to see what jumps out at us.

Albachiaro: We have a beautiful countertop here, don’t we?

Fasculo: We really, really do.  And I think most people who are watching at home would think that this is some sort of stone or quartz, but in fact it’s not!

Albachiaro: No, this is premier solid surfacing from Kanwa Surfaces.

Fasculo: Very nice.

Albachiaro: Yes, it’s a solid surface—the premier solid surface.  So it’s totally seamless, it is environmentally friendly, it’s durable, it’s stain, chemical-resistant, and resistant to heat also.

Fasculo: Wow!  You know, I find it unique that you said it’s environmentally friendly.  How do you make a countertop environmentally friendly?

Albachiaro: Well, we’re very concerned about the environment.  And that’s why we use 22% recycled materials in the beautiful countertop that we have here.

Fasculo: That is something we all need to concern ourselves with.

Albachiaro: Absolutely.

Fasculo: Also, I mean, when I look at this I think what it might cost for this to be a stone.  In fact, it’s seamless; it would be ten times what you would pay for this.

Albachiaro: Yes.  Solid surfacing allows you to have a seamless appearance in a continuous running surface, where you can have coal back-splashes, intricate sinks, and you can use it in many different areas.  Let’s talk about some of the different colors and applications that we have.  It comes in twelve beautiful colors.  This one, Tumo, is our color that we’re using here in the kitchen.  And again, because it’s a solid surface, it’s easy to clean and easy to maintain.

Fasculo (Designing Spaces): You know what?  I love some of the names of these.  I see Rhythmic Shine, and Orange Moon, Leche, Tiara, all across the board.  So literally, something for every kitchen!

Albachiaro: Absolutely.  Also, it’s great for use in bathrooms.  It has an NSF 51 Certification for food service applications.

Designing Spaces: And I also understand it’s very easy to clean.  Can you go ahead and give me a demonstration?

Albachiaro: It is really simple.  It’s simple soap and water—just a wiping on the surface and a wiping off.  Because it’s nonporous, nothing penetrates it.  Where, with natural stones and granites and quartzes, any of those products—they can absorb water.  And that’s where mold and mildew grows.  And that’s what you can’t get with the solid surfaces.

Designing Spaces: Especially great for us who have little kids.

Albachiaro: Absolutely.

Designing Spaces: Now, I also understand that there is a quality about Breon that most people probably wouldn’t understand.  Could you describe that to me?

Albachiaro: Well, they say this material actually admits far more infrared rays, which is supposed to have a soothing and calming effect on the people in the kitchen.

Designing Spaces: This is a good thing, especially around Thanksgiving so I can cook that turkey and be calm throughout the entire ordeal.

Albachiaro: That’s what they say. I prefer a glass of wine.  But that is what they say.

Designing Spaces: Well, that sounds great!  I’m calm already. Vince, thank you so much for inviting me into this lovely kitchen.  This Henwa Surfaces Breon line is fantastic.

Albachiaro: Thank you very much, Brian.

Designing Spaces: Feeling good in the kitchen, I’m Brian Fasculo!

O2 Media’s the Balancing Act on Lifetime with Chef Don McMillian

The following segment aired on O2 Media’s The Balancing Act on Lifetime Television. Joining the show was Chef Don McMillian to talk about a healthy cooking with Green Mountain Gringo Salsa.

O2 Media: We love salsa.  I know a lot of you our there consider yourself to be connoisseurs when it comes to the texture, the flavor, and, of course, the spiciness and freshness of it.  We have one of those connoisseurs with us today, Chef Don McMillian from the Stocked Pot Cooking School, to show us what good salsa is really made of and some rocking recipes you can make with it. So, I read some disturbing news the other day that salsa can have a lot of preservatives in it.  Can you tell us about this?

Don: Many salsas have a large amount of preservatives in them.  But our Green Mountain Gringo Salsa has none.  It’s so fresh, and you can actually see the tomatoes, the onions, the jalapeños, the tomatillos.  It’s all in there.

O2 Media: Chef Don, you can really see the difference.  It seems like a pretty healthy snack.

Don: It’s a wonderful, healthy snack.  But just read the label.  I mean, that tells the story, “No preservatives, fat free, low salt, gluten free, no allergens.” And you know what?  It tastes good.  It’s won multiple awards for taste.  In fact, Women’s Day and Vegetarian Times said it’s the best-tasting salsa.

O2 Media: Well, my husband loves salsa.  And you’ve made some incredible recipes using salsas in great ways that we can incorporate it in our meals.

Don: I sure did.  These recipes are so easy.  We just seasoned some chicken breasts, broiled them for just a little bit, placed them with our Green Mountain Gringo Salsa, tossed it up, plated it on our Green Mountain Gringo Tortilla Strips, added a little bit of avocado, some cheese – it’s done.

O2 Media: My husband really likes the really spicy salsa.  But I’m a little bit more of a mild girl, I admit it.  Do you have different flavors?

Don: We have something for everybody.  Check this out – we have roasted chili pepper, roasted garlic.  Everyone loves garlic.  Mild, medium, and for your husband, hot, yes.  One of my favorite recipes is Green Mountain Gringo rice.  It’s so easy.  A jar of Green Mountain Gringo Salsa, a cup of rice, a little bit of chicken stock – it’s done.

O2 Media: That’s it?  Great for working women that are on the go all the time.

Don: Another recipe is to take our Green Mountain Gringo Strips, roll them in a little plastic bag with a rolling pin, put a little bit of olive oil on some salmon, season it up with the Green Mountain Gringo Strips, put it on a plank, 350 degrees in the oven, and our sauce is the Green Mountain Gringo Salsa. Plus, it’s only 10 calories per serving.

O2 Media: Only 10 calories? I love that. It’s kind of like a new spin because a lot of people use bread crumbs, but I’m sold on the tortilla strips. Where can I find these Green Mountain Gringo products?

Don: You can find them at your local supermarket in either one of three sections – the natural-food section, the Hispanic section, or the salty snack section.  It’s really worth looking for.
